Over in my 5-to-9 life, I wrote about the impact of colour for my fellow creative writers. But I realized that it also applies to anyone who writes in their day job too.
So for all the storytellers, report writers, and communicators in my network, try using colour to boost your brain in whatever stage of the writing process you’re in.
⭐ Brainstorming ideas? Try yellow or orange (bright sticky notes, a sunshine-coloured mug) to spark energy and optimism.
🌌 Researching or planning? Surround yourself with deep blue accents, like an indigo notebook or desktop background. It helps with focus and logic.
🥬 Drafting? Choose green or soft blue. Maybe a leafy plant or a periwinkle water bottle. These colours keep you calm and balanced.
🫐 Revising? Cover your desk in purple file folders or use a teal pen. Perfect for fresh insights and creative re-thinking.
⭕ Proofreading? Go with red or grey accessories, like your fave red pen or steely notebook. They sharpen your eye for detail.
🌺 Reviewing a colleague’s draft? Try green or soft pink accents in the form of artwork or fun objects in your work space. These colours help you give empathetic and balanced feedback.
🧧 Presenting or promoting your work? Bold red or gold will help you feel confident and dynamic.
What colour are you today?
